Sun Speed

Beginning as Sun International in 1977 we imported and converted European sports cars not available in the US to US EPA, CARB and DOT specifications.

Mercedes 500 SL for Clint Eastwood, Ferrari 400 GTi for Wilt Chamberlain, a Jensen for Mick Fleetwood, Lamborghini Countach for Rod Stewart. Major importation programs included Renault 5 Turbos, Ferrari Boxers both 365 and 512, all Group B Rally cars, Ford RS 200, Peugeot 205 Turbo 16, Porsche 959, etc. Many of these cars were featured in magazine articles, movies James Bond; Never Say Never, etc.

Sun International successfully completed the DOT Certification, and, EPA Small Volume Manufacture Certification of the Renualt 5 Turbo becoming a Vehicle Manufacturer. The DOT gave Sun International exclusive permission to modify the R5 Turbo for US importation.

Other projects included EPA Engine Family Certification of the Escort Cosworth, both versions (Marelli & EEC IV) as well as CARB certification. And DOT approval of the Escort Cosworth.  Sun International was the only small volume manufacturer that persisted with this impossible process and engineering to successful completion.

The import Certifications, EPA, DOT Type approvals and, CARB approval granted to Sun International are a matter of public record.
